The Border is a Weapon is an exhibition of new artwork from the US/MX border region, curated by Laredo, TX artist and educator Gil Rocha and presented by Other Border Wall Project. This exhibition will feature rising-star artists Maritza Bautista, Angel Cabrales, Juan de Dios Mora, Daniela Madrigal, and José Villalobos, whose work includes sculpture, printmaking, video, and performance.
The origins of this exhibition date back to the Other Border Wall collective's initial creative resistance to the border wall in 2017. In 2018, Other Border Wall made a visit to Laredo/Nuevo Laredo where, hosted by Rocha, they caught a quick look at the mix of delights and challenges of the place. A vision took shape for connecting the region's art and stories to their parallels in Pittsburgh. The exhibition opening will take place during the Gallery Crawl. The curator and all of the artists will be present. A performance by artist José Villalobos will take place during the opening at 8 pm.
This exhibition would not be possible without the support of The Opportunity Fund, The McKinney Charitable Trust, The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and individual donors.
